JAMES MELLICK'S NUMEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS |
|
James Daniel is the most prolific member of our family. His creations are clearly those of an artistic genius. His art touches the mind, body, and soul and may be as therapeutic as anybody's medicine. His work will be remembered when the rest of this generation is long forgotten.

![]() The First Gabapentin Pain Poster in 1995 |
Neurontin was first introduced as an anticonvulsant in 1994. It had been researched for 10 years but its pain relieving qualities was not recognized until Dr. Mellick prescribed gabapentin for the very first time on Friday May 20, 1994. Gabapentin was not a particularly strong anticonvulsant and was not expected to gross more than $500,000 annually. What ensued was an amazing saga that is ongoing. It began with a $20,000 dollar bonus to the drug representative for the best first year sales in any United States territory to a new paradigm of pain therapy and a multibillion dollar industry and an entirely new direction for neuropathic pain research field has successfully launched neuropathic pain therapeutics such as Lyrica (pregabalin) and others. |

| In addition to other treatment options, the patient was offered methylphenidate therapy because of the first author's prior successful experience using methylphenidate for the management of pain of sympathetic origin in other patients. The patient had immediate pain relief and increased range of motion in the knee. Her pain was reduced to 2/10 on a 10/10 visual analogue scale. She continued to have relief and asked to return to work the following week. Long term relief persisted. |
